What is the Sacramento Burger Battle?

The Sacramento Burger Battle is a charity burger cook-off and tasting event where 15 of the area's best restaurants cook up their top burger for an evening of burgers, beers, local wine, live music and prize drawings.

This fantastic video taken by Rick Mindermann of Corti Brothers (one of our esteemed judges) gives a nice recap of the epic 2012 event:
This blog post has an overview and some great photos that help to explain what you can expect on the night of the event.

When is the Sacramento Burger Battle?

The 2013 Sacramento Burger Battle is on Wednesday, September 18, 2013. The inaugural Sacramento Burger Battle was held on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.  Coincidentally, this also happens to be National Cheeseburger Day :)

VIP ticket holders get in at 6 p.m. and General Admission ticket holders get in at 7 p.m. We'll be serving up burgers and fun until 10 p.m. or until the food runs out.

Where will the Sacramento Burger Battle be Held?

The inaugural Sacramento Burger Battle will be held right down on the field at Raley Field.

Who is putting on this event?

The Sacramento Burger Battle is being put on by Rodney Blackwell, a long time Sacramento area resident who runs the burger review blog at burgerjunkies.com

How much are tickets to the Sacramento Burger Battle?

The General Admission ticket price is $55 for entry at 7 p.m. The VIP ticket price is $75 for early entry at 6 p.m.

Tickets go on sale July 1st and during the Early Bird period, the tickets will be specially priced at $45 (GA) and $65 (VIP). This event is expected to sell out, so please get your tickets early :)

You mentioned a charity. Where is the money going?

Great question! The funds raised from the Sacramento Burger Battle will benefit the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Our goal is to have the event costs (venue rental, insurance, etc) covered by the sponsors and in kind donations. That would leave all funds raised from the ticket sales to be donated to the charity following the event.

Why the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America? What is it?

The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America is a non-profit organization that raises funds for much needed research to find a cure and patient programs that help those afflicted with this condition. Crohn's is an autoimmune disorder that affects the intestinal tract and prevents the body from absorbing important nutrients when food is consumed. More info can be found at ccfa.org. My oldest daughter (now 10) was diagnosed with Cronn's when she was 5 years old. Since I can't cure the disease myself, I figured I'd do what I can to help those that are trying. The goal of this event is twofold: to showcase the fantastic dining scene available in the Sacramento area and to raise awareness and much needed funding for a great cause.

What does the ticket price cover exactly?

Another great question! Once you buy your ticket, pretty much everything is covered. All the burger samples you can eat, drinks, live music, and desserts. Even parking is covered for you. We may have t-shirts for sale and raffle tickets available for purchase, but if you just want to come and eat, drink and have a great time with your friends, your ticket price has you covered :)

What drink options will be available? Anything non-alcoholic?

Along with the complimentary craft beer, cider, and wine tastings available, we will also  have water and other non-alcoholic soft drinks available at no extra charge.

Will there be vegetarian burger options available?

Great question! Many of the chefs are still deciding on which of their burger creations to present at the Sacramento Burger Battle, so I wouldn't be able to say with certainty what will be there.

But just going by the general nature of the event, I think it's safe to say that it will be a mostly beefy affair :)

There will be a few non-burger, non-beef options available like desserts and possibly a couple of side dishes from restaurants as well as a few tastes from Feeding Crane Farms, but for the most part it will be meaty burgers.

Are children allowed at the Sacramento Burger Battle?

You MUST be 21 years of age (or older) to attend the Sacramento Burger Battle. For insurance reasons and because this event includes beer and wine tasting, children and anyone under the age of 21 are not allowed at this event. ID's will be checked at the door.

Which restaurants will be participating in the 2013 Sacramento Burger Battle

Why isn’t my favorite burger from XYZ Restaurant there?

Another great question! The answer will vary depending on the restaurant. Since we have a panel of judges that will be sampling and rating each burger, if we had more than 15 restaurants, it would've been near impossible for them to try them all. It's important to understand that this is a charity tasting type event, so the restaurants that are participating have agreed to donate their time, talents and food to prepare hundreds of burgers so that we can create a fun event that allows 100% of the ticket proceeds to go to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America charity. Some restaurants had prior commitments, some restaurants weren't interested in this type of event or were already supporting other events in the same month. We also had a call for entries open for a couple of months and it's possible that the restaurant didn't reach out to us in time. We contacted several restaurants directly and some didn't reply. Anytime you have to narrow a pool of literally dozens and dozens of top notch burgers in the Sacramento area down to 15, you're going to leave out somebody's favorite. We did our best to include as many top rated and local favorite burgers, chefs and restaurants into our first year event. I wholehearted believe our inaugural Sacramento Burger Battle event at Raley Field will have something for just about every type of burger lover :)

How can my restaurant compete in the Sacramento Burger Battle?

We only have 15 slots open for participation in this year's Sacramento Burger Battle. You are welcome to read about the event and fill out the application here.
